Going Nowhere is a character-driven comedy that follows aspiring filmmaker, Samson Tomes, who wants nothing more than to get his independent film into the prestigious Middle of Nowhere Film Festival. But, during a meeting with the festival’s director, it’s ever-so-apparent that Samson is in over his head after he lies about having connections to Kevin Costner. The story follows Samson (Taylor Stein) and his best friend, Johnny Mayfair (Paul Gedbaw), as they struggle to fulfill their dreams and continue to pay rent to their Russian landlord (Matt Geiler).
So that’s the show in a nutshell. But how did we get that nut in the shell? Well…that’s a bit more involved than we’d care to admit, plus it involves science…and no one likes to read about science on a TV show website. So, we’ll give you the historical version!
The story goes that the original idea came about around the year 2005, and at the time, was merely a premise with no plot. “Wouldn’t it be funny if someone was trying to shoot a film and the famous, lead actor was nowhere to be found?” Hard to believe that turned out to be “Going Nowhere.” The pilot episode was written two years later, in the spring of 2007, out of necessity. Writer/Director/Producer/Actor/Camera Operator/Editor, Taylor Stein, had been working on the infamous Omaha alternative news program, The KXVO 10:00 News with fellow “Going Nowhere” cast members Matt Geiler (Landlord), Jeff VanRoy (Hippie) and Kyle Benecke (Film Festival Director). When the KXVO 10:00 News was cancelled, Stein decided to try his hand at writing a TV pilot. After bouncing around some plot ideas with Paul Gedbaw (Johnny Mayfair), Stein decided to shoot the pilot episode just for fun…because he liked having fun…and because he had no job.
The pilot was completed in October of 2007 and in May of 2008, the show was entered into a contest through the FX network, which was looking for a comedy to add to it’s line-up that would work in conjunction with the hit FX show, “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.” The winner would produce a TV pilot that would air on FX. Though “Going Nowhere” did not win (the show “Testees” was the eventual winner), of the 400 entries received, through some Nancy Drew-like detective work we discovered it did crack the “Top 110″…no lie. So, riding that wave of moderate approval, Stein pitched the show around Omaha. The first stop was WOWT’s digital station 62O. Though they were not ready to put the show on TV, they were interested in using it as a web show. So the show began “airing” on TheOmahaBuzz.com in the summer of 2008. 30 webisodes later, Stein had enough material for 4 television episodes, and, with TV being the ultimate goal, he contacted KXVO about the possibility of getting the show on the air. After viewing the pilot, KXVO ordered 6 episodes for the first season, which would air beginning in the summer of 2009. When Season 1 ended, no one really knew if the show would continue, but, after some talks with KXVO, it was decided that the summer of 2010 would feature the re-airing of Season 1, followed immediately by new, Season 2 episodes.
